Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) recently presented proposals for relief to the SPD and the Greens. Now the SPD parliamentary group is reacting.

The The SPD parliamentary group is open to tax relief, but wants to target employees and companies. “But it should be about the working middle class in this country – and not about top earners, who really need relief the least,” said SPD parliamentary group vice-president Achim Post of the German Press Agency in Berlin.

Post was responding to suggestions from Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP). This wants to relieve the burden on the economy by gradually reducing the solidarity surcharge and providing incentives for overtime. The FDP leader, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) have presented corresponding plans, the “Spiegel” reported on Friday. But a decision is still pending. According to the report, the proposed relief measures have a total volume of well over 20 billion euros.

Post questions this approach. “I also don’t see how an abolition of the solidarity scheme for top earners could be financed given the strained budget situation,” he explained. “What is needed is an approach that brings together, not juxtaposes, further growth impulses, investments in the future and the strengthening of social cohesion.”

Lindner has recently repeatedly advocated abolishing the solidarity surcharge step by step to support the economy. It is currently paid by the top ten percent of taxpayers, including many companies. The Ministry of Finance said on Friday that it was working on measures for an economic turnaround. At the same time, Lindner’s house emphasized: “The reporting is purely speculative.”
