Did the publisher’s daughter Sara Manzer murder her father? After her release from prison, doubts arise. Clarifying this is not the only challenge for the Freiburg investigators Tobler and Berg.

  • 4 out of 5 points
  • Solid thriller in which not just one, but two murder cases have to be solved

What’s the matter?

Sara Manzer (Johanna Wokalek) is released from prison after five years. The publisher’s daughter was in prison for allegedly stabbing her father Karl. Back in freedom, Manzer tries to build a new life with the help of longtime companions like her best friend Marlene Hopp (Sophie Lutz) and new acquaintances like her fellow inmate Ines Kaiser (Annette Strasser). But Manzer is caught up by her past: Doubts are raised about her confession at the time. She herself cannot remember killing her father. One who wanted to investigate the case more closely was ex-cop Benno Rose. Before he can share his findings, he too is found stabbed.

Why is the “crime scene” worthwhile?

The “crime scene” from the Black Forest is always like a grab bag: you never know what to expect. A completely crazy case like the carnival episode “I cried in a dream” (2020) or an exciting strip like “Rebland” (2020). With the current episode “Sara’s Confession”, screenwriter Astrid Ströher and director Kai Wessel have created a solid crime thriller. The film offers a good dose of suspense – horrifying figures in the dark, snow-covered, lonely forests, a fast-paced chase through Freiburg – and with Johanna Wokalek a convincing leading actress. In addition, the investigators Franziska Tobler (Eva Löbau) and Friedemann Berg (Hans-Jochen Wagner) have to deal with two cases: They not only have to find the murderer of the policeman Benno Rose, but also clarify who is responsible for the death of the publisher Karl Manzer is responsible. Double the suspense until the end.

What bothers?

A murder case that is being reopened after many years because the wrong perpetrator is believed to be behind bars: the scenario is strongly reminiscent of the “Four Years” case in Cologne that was broadcast the previous week. The broadcast date is therefore a bit unfortunate in terms of timing.

The commissioners?

It’s complicated – that’s probably the best way to describe the relationship between Franziska Tobler and Friedemann Berg. Since they ended up in bed together after a carnival party, the private life of the investigators has stopped. As if not only the commissioners, but also the spectators should forget what happened. In the new case, too, the focus is on purely official matters.
