On Boxing Day there was a ratings duel between the Frankfurt “crime scene” detectives and Florian Silbereisen as the “dream ship” captain. The crime thriller won – but not with the young audience.

It’s the annual duel for the TV ratings: “crime scene” or “The Dream Ship” – which format attracts more viewers to the TV screens on Boxing Day? After the ZDF series was ahead last year, the ARD crime thriller scored again this time. The Frankfurt case of “loss of control” 5.04 million people saw it, which corresponds to a market share of 18.7 percent. 4.68 million people tuned in to “Dream Ship” (17.4 percent).

The young audience of 14 to 49 year olds was “Dream ship” (14.5 percent) but ahead of “Tatort” (10.6 percent). The leader in this target group was the Tom Cruise film “Top Gun: Maverick”, which was broadcast on Sat.1 and 1.12 million people (18.9 percent).

“The Dream Ship” won Christmas 2022

Last year, the “Dream Ship” also benefited from an extremely weak “crime scene” broadcast: only 4.09 million people wanted to see the Christmas crime thriller “Murder under Mistletoe” from Munich at the time. The “Dream Ship” episode at Christmas 2022 reached 5.71 million people.

The ratings for the “crime scene” and the “dream ship” have been declining for years. For comparison: When Florian Silbereisen debuted in his role as Captain Max Parger in 2019, 7.49 million people tuned in. The development is similar with Sunday thrillers. Apart from the Münster duo Thiel and Boerne, played by Axel Prahl and Jan Josef Liefers, hardly any team of investigators gathers the masses in front of the TV.

On New Year’s Day, “Tatort” and “Dream Ship” will run parallel again

The cases of Frankfurt inspectors Janneke and Brix are often among the weaker episodes. The film “Merry. Too Late”, which was broadcast in September, reached 6.4 million people – one of the lowest “Tatort” ratings of 2023. Broich and Koch have announced their departure from the crime series for the coming year. The two actors will be seen in their last case in 2024 with the title “It’s so green when Frankfurt’s mountains bloom”.

On New Year’s Day there will be another direct clash between “crime scene” and “dream ship”: while the… ARD shows the last case of actress Franziska Weisz as investigator Julia Grosz, the “dream ship” sets sail in Indonesia. The 100th episode of the ZDF series features a guest appearance by Amira and Oliver Pocher as well as a half-naked captain – the ratings duel is on.
