Tasmania: The Bay of Fires Walk – hiking at the end of the world

Even for Australians, Tasmania is a long way away. The flight from Sydney to Australia’s largest island takes two hours. The southernmost state has an area approximately the size of Bavaria. More than 10,000 square kilometers are protected and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Of the twelve famous Great Walks of Australia, five alone lead through the natural landscapes of Tasmania. In contrast to the alpine Overland Track in Cradle Mountain National Park, the Bay of Fires Walk always follows the coast, over snow-white sandy beaches and rounded granite cliffs.

“We’ll be walking south in the next few days. Make sure you apply sunscreen to your neck, especially,” says Claire, one of the two guides who accompanies a group of ten hikers on the march.

Because in the summer southern hemisphere the sun is high in the north at midday. You will spend the night in tents on the beach and in an architecturally very special eco-lodge 40 meters above sea level.
