Frank Plasberg and “Hard but fair” – up to now they were inseparable. Now a change is announced.

Frank Plasberg (65) is giving up the moderation of “Hart aber fair” after more than 20 years. His successor will be Louis Klamroth (32). Plasberg said goodbye to the ARD talk show at the end of November after almost 750 broadcasts, Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) announced in Cologne. Louis Klamroth will present the show for the first time in January.

“When you have traveled with a program for so long, you also want it to develop further. And now is the right time for that,” Plasberg explained his decision. It’s lucky for the show that it’s being taken over by a colleague like Louis Klamroth. “In any case, I’m still enthusiastic on Monday evenings – as a spectator.”

Klamroth said he was very pleased to be able to lead one of the most established formats on German television into the future. “I am convinced that strong and responsible public service broadcasting is essential, especially in these times,” says Klamroth.

Politics meets reality

WDR program director Jörg Schönenborn emphasized that Plasberg had established a new moderation style. He interviews politicians from the everyday perspective of the citizens. “It was anything but usual when ‘Hard but Fair’ started.” With Louis Klamroth, the show is now entering a new era. “Klamroth is a clever and sensitive observer of our society. As a young and yet very experienced moderator and reporter, he will bring new ideas to the show.”

The “hard but fair” format will change, but will remain true to the most important principle: “That politics meets reality in the show and has to explain and prove itself.”

Winner of the German Television Award

Hamburg-born Klamroth moderated, among other things, the political talk show “Klamroths Konter” on ntv, for which he won the German Television Prize in 2018. Last year he drew attention to himself with the “ProSieben Bundestag Election Show”. Together with the team at his production company, which he founded in 2019, he had already conducted exclusive interviews with the chancellor candidates for ProSieben in advance. In addition, Klamroth produced an election talk for ZDF with “Für & Wider” and acted as a reporter through the ZDF documentary “The Truth About Inheritance”.
