Maylis de Kerangal’s stories have something crystalline, strangely sparkling, they develop a seductive appeal. This is all the more astounding as it doesn’t have that much to do with the plot. The almost exclusively female protagonists aren’t as clearly the focus of attention as one might expect. It’s more about the perspective and about individual phenomena that create their own dynamic, about an aesthetic surplus.
