Tacos, tequila, tattoos: a culinary adventure through Mexico

Caribbean beaches that don’t need a Photoshop finish, ancient temples in the jungle and tacos until you drop. Mexico is a country full of adventure and the unexpected. Johannes “Jo” Riffelmacher and Thomas “Cozy” Kosikowski, the two minds behind “Salt & Silver”, were there. In “Salt & Silver Mexico – Tacos, Tequila, Tattoos” they have discovered what they have discovered, where hidden gems are far away from the overcrowded tourist spots, which dishes have taken their shoes off and why they like to have a sip of tequila with their food. documented. A book that makes wanderlust grow.

In 2014 it was enough, enough work, enough of Hamburg. Jo and Cozy quit their jobs and moved out into the world. In his luggage are two sharp knives, two surfboards, camera equipment and a sense of adventure. They wanted to explore Latin America and do nothing more than travel, surf and, above all, eat well for a year.

Authentic Mexican cuisine

The “two crooks with their hearts in the right place,” as they describe themselves, have now long since returned to Hamburg. But they are not back in the old treadmill and in the grayness of everyday life from which they once fled. Today they bring their culinary discoveries to the plate as gastro career changers in their own trendy Hamburg restaurant “Salt & Silver”; you can read about their adventures in the cookbooks.

But they say they are far from finished with Latin America. There is one country in particular that appeals to the two travel junkies: Mexico. In “Salt & Silver Mexico – Tacos, Tequila, Tattoos” they have compiled their experiences in the land of the Mayas and Aztecs. But why the triad of tacos, tequila, tattoos? Jo and Cozy can’t get enough of tacos, they’re one of their favorites in Mexican cuisine, which is why they made it into the title.

However, the cookbook is about much more, it shows a cross-section of different dishes or as they say: “Everything that knocked us out of the park”. The same applies to drinks, including tequila and mezcal, and cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks.

That leaves the matter of the tattoos; for both of them, they belong on the skin like food belongs in the stomach. From their first trip to Mexico they brought back 15 tattoos alone. Many of them related to cooking. Cozy collects kitchen utensils, Jo collects the ingredients. For example, one person has a lime squeezer on their leg, the other has a lime with it. The new cookbook is peppered with photos and illustrations. A tribute, as they say, “to all the ink artists out there.”
