SZ podcast with Munich draftsman and illustrator Frank Schmolke. – Munich

In the SZ podcast “Munich personally”, interesting personalities give insights into their lives, their work and their thoughts. They reveal what connects them to the city and where Munich is special for them. This episode is a conversation with the award-winning illustrator and comic artist Frank Schmolke.

Frank Schmolke’s black and white graphic novel “Nights in Paradise” is one of the most successful German-language comic books of recent years. The native of Munich processes his experiences as a taxi driver. For years he drove mainly in the late evening hours to secure his livelihood. The story of his book takes place during the Oktoberfest period. Although it is autobiographical in nature, it has a psychologically exciting fictional spin. The book is currently being filmed for a series, starring Jürgen Vogel and Birgit Minichmayr.

Schmolke, born in 1967, no longer earns his living as a “taximan”, but he still knows the difficulties of this profession. How does he perceive the changes in the city of his childhood? How does it feel to drive through Schwabing where he grew up? What is the best way to behave during the Oktoberfest? And how do you manage to become a successful draftsman? These questions and much more are the topics of this podcast from the series “Munich personally” while driving across the city in a taxi.

In a taxi up to the Bavaria

Ulrike Heidenreich and René Hofmann, the heads of the Munich, Region and Bavaria departments, as well as Leute editor Sabine Buchwald, pick up their guests at their place of residence, their place of work or another place of particular importance. With the tram, the bus, the subway or suburban train or – like this time – with a Mercedes – they travel their individual route with the people they are talking to. This time, Frank Schmolke will take you from Hohenzollernstraße to Bavaria – past historical places and special places with memories.

The topics of conversation at “Munich Personally” revolve around current projects and individual plans, around the favorite book, favorite restaurant, favorite film of the interlocutor. The podcast team of the local editorial office of the SZ invites people who have a connection to Munich. You live in the city or you are visiting. They come from the fields of politics, gastronomy, culture, sports or media.
