SZ podcast: Why Intel gets ten billion euros from the state – Economy

It has been decided since Monday: The IT group Intel will receive 9.9 billion euros from the German state. So that he can build a semiconductor factory in Magdeburg, in Saxony-Anhalt. There could even be more state aid.

A total of around 10,000 jobs are to be created at Intel itself and at future suppliers. Above all, however, it is about the fact that the traffic light government wants to make Germany more independent when it comes to semiconductors, such as microchips.

Nothing works today without semiconductors, they are the heart of the digital transformation. Microchips are found, for example, in smartphones, game consoles, laptops, household appliances, in medical technology and of course in cars. So far, however, they have only rarely been manufactured in Germany. Therefore, German companies are dependent on chip manufacturers from abroad. And since the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine at the latest, people want to free themselves as much as possible from dependencies from abroad. In this episode, Claus Hulverscheidt, SZ business editor, explains why the subsidies are still too high.
