SZ podcast “Munich personally” with doctor Thomas Beutner – Munich

Around 500 to 600 men and women live on the streets in Munich. According to the social department, the trend is increasing. Quite a few of them suffer from health problems. For many homeless people, going to a doctor’s office or hospital is still out of the question. The reasons for this are varied and very individual, says Thomas Beutner in the SZ podcast “Munich Personally”.

The specialist in general medicine, together with Angelika Eisenried, runs the medical practice in the municipal accommodation home for men, which is run by the Catholic Men’s Welfare Association (KMFV) on Pilgersheimer Straße. Since 1997, there has been a kind of rolling medical care for the homeless who cannot or do not want to go to a practice: the Munich street ambulance. Beutner and Eisenried travel with the treatment bus three times a week together with a nurse from the Brothers of Mercy to visit the city’s homeless.

How can you help if you see a homeless person? What should you definitely not do? How does the street ambulance work? Beutner gives the answers in this episode of the “Munich Personal” podcast. The route leads from Rossmarkt via the Isartor to the main fire station.

For the Munich editorial team’s podcast, Ulrike Heidenreich and René Hofmann, the heads of the Munich, Region and Bavaria department, as well as people editor Sabine Buchwald and social editor Jana Jöbstl meet alternately with different guests. They pick you up at your place of residence or work and accompany you on your personal route. Sometimes by tram, subway, sometimes in a taxi or even on foot. Or they arrange to meet at special places in the city for a conversation.

It’s about current projects and very personal plans, about topics that move the city. The SZ podcast team invites people who have a connection to Munich. You live in the city or are visiting. They come from the areas of politics, gastronomy, culture, sport or media.
