SZ podcast “Munich personally”: Anke Buettner, head of Monacensia – Munich

Since 2019, Anke Buettner has headed a very special Munich institution: the Monacensia. But what is the Monacensia? The short answer to this question: the city’s literary archive. At first it sounds like long bookshelves, index boxes and quiet workstations, which are not equally attractive for everyone. There are actually a lot of books and work opportunities here, but there are so many more. A special feature of the Monacensia: you stay in the lavishly renovated artist’s villa of Adolf von Hildebrand on Maria-Theresia-Straße – a villa that is open to everyone. Admission is free.

The Monacensia is also a museum with changing exhibitions and a place where you can read and research, but also just meet someone and hang out. There is a café run by an artists’ collective and events take place regularly in the building.

Anke Buettner explains in the podcast what it means to manage and stock a literary archive and to preserve the works of authors who have a connection to Munich for posterity. The Monacensia is working very consistently to close gaps: “We are looking for what was forgotten or destroyed in the past,” she says.

In December, Anke Buettner will be honored with the Karl Preusker Medal for her dedicated work. It is one of the highest awards in German libraries.

For the Munich editorial podcast, Ulrike Heidenreich and René Hofmann, the heads of the Munich, Region and Bavaria department, social editor Jana Jöbstl and people editor Sabine Buchwald meet alternately with different guests. They arrange to meet at special places in the city for a conversation or take their guests around the city on public transport, in a taxi or sometimes in a rickshaw.

It’s about current projects and very personal plans, about topics that move the city. The SZ podcast team invites people who have a connection to Munich. You live in the city or are visiting. They come from the areas of politics, gastronomy, culture, sport or media.
