SZ podcast: Farmer protests: Are farmers the nation’s doormats? – Business

Thousands of farmers mobilized against the traffic light government on Monday to protest against the planned removal of tax breaks. “We won’t accept this,” shouted farmers’ president Joachim Rukwied at a rally in Berlin. An end to regulations on agricultural diesel and vehicle tax exemption is “a declaration of war” that one accepts.

The farmers are right to protest, says Michael Bauchmüller, agricultural expert for the Berlin SZ editorial team. “Farmers are already the pinched ones, as you can see from the massive farm deaths in recent years.” But since Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) also expresses understanding for the discontent and promises further consultations in the coalition, the last word has not been spoken, believes Bauchmüller.
