SZ podcast Bavaria election: The CSU urgently needs answers to the AfD – Bavaria

The Union won the state elections in Hesse and Bavaria. But the biggest election winner in both federal states is the AfD: for the first time, the right-wingers are becoming opposition leaders in two state parliaments in western Germany. The traffic light parties, on the other hand, lose significantly. “This is primarily the result of dissatisfaction with Berlin,” says SZ Bayern editor Katja Auer.

In Bavaria, the AfD is above all a “notoriously divided bunch that did no actual work at all, but mainly attracted attention with slogans and agitation.” But Hubert Aiwanger’s “speak” in this election campaign was also “extreme right-wing” in places, says Auer. The relationship between Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder from the CSU and his economics minister, the Free Voters leader Hubert Aiwanger, has been tense for a long time. But it’s not just the CSU that needs to urgently think about how to respond to these successes.
