The rumors have been circulating for a long time, now there is an official confirmation and concrete dates: The sequel to the US action film “Cliffhanger” (1993) with global star Sylvester Stallone in the lead role will largely be shot in Bavaria.

This has been confirmed by the Bavarian Film-Television Fund (FFF), which is supporting the production of “Cliffhanger 2” with two million euros in the “International Cinema Films and Series” section. According to the information, well over half of the filming will take place in Bavaria from summer 2024.

Munich city center and the Penzing Studios were named as specific locations. These have earned an excellent reputation in the industry since 2022; Production companies from all over the world appreciate, among other things, the modern LED dome called Hyperbowl. The approximately 500 square meter, house-high LED wall enables animated 3D worlds as a background for all kinds of film scenes. This high-resolution real-time bluff already benefited the remake of “The Crow”, directed by Rupert Sanders, and also the German hit -Director Bora Dagtekin (“Fack ju Göhte”) shot in Penzing, namely “Chantal in Fairytale Land” with Jella Haase. Now mountaineer Stallone could soon be scrambling around in front of the video wall.

The focus of “Cliffhanger 2” is once again the mountaineer Gabe Walker (Stallone), who now lives in the Dolomites and runs an exclusive mountain lodge there before he gets into great danger. The film is directed by Jean-François Richet (“Plane”) and written by Mark Bianculli (“Lincoln Rhyme: The Bone Hunter”). The action film is a German-British co-production; the producers are Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher, Neal H. Moritz, Toby Jaffe, Philipp Kreuzer and Joe Neurauter. Neurauter is also managing director of Penzing Studios.

For the period after the end of the actors’ strike in Hollywood, Neurauter has announced several major projects for his studios at the former air base in Penzing. In addition to Sylvester Stallone, other world stars could appear in front of the high-tech cameras there in 2024.
