Swimming World Cup: Ukrainian swimmer: Tough preparation in wartime

At the award ceremony, Wladyslaw Buchow visibly struggled with his emotions. When the Ukrainian national anthem was played after his gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle at the World Swimming Championships in Doha, the 21-year-old almost cried. He patted his chest with his hand. In the interview zone of the Aspire Dome, Buchow then reported on his difficult preparation in Kiev.

“You never know when Russian missiles will attack. That was tough,” said Buchow. He said he first prepared in the Ukrainian capital, then flew with the team to Spain to train and from there traveled directly to Qatar. His first World Cup title means a lot to him – also for his country, which was attacked by Russia.
