Olympics in sight, World Cup medal in sight: Gose aggressive
European swimming champion Isabel Gose has two goals at the World Championships in Doha: a World Cup medal, but above all a ticket to Paris.
“A medal was also the goal last year. When you get to this level and swim into the final in a good position, you always think that you want to be on the podium. But you can only influence your own performances and “try to achieve your personal best,” said the Magdeburg native to the dpa.
The 21-year-old has been considered a candidate for precious metal for two years, but it has never worked out at a World Cup. “One or two athletes won’t start. This might increase my chances of winning a medal,” said Gose. “Of course I want to try to qualify for the Olympics in order to take some of the pressure off for the rest of the time,” added the freestyle specialist, thereby addressing an important topic: the Olympic Games in Paris.
Everything is subordinate to this climax, including the World Cup. “It’s not just like this for us, but certainly for all athletes,” said Gose. A place among the best four athletes in a race in a corresponding time would be enough for a ticket to Paris.
There has never been a World Cup in an Olympic year before. Nevertheless, Gose hardly changed his training. Only the training camp in South Africa at the start of the year was new. “We trust our trainers to use their training methods so that we can achieve top performance not just once, but also more often,” reported Gose. But the training camp, of all things, could become a problem for them. Immediately after her return, she suffered from food poisoning, which led to her taking a break from training.
