The 21-year-old came third in the 400-meter freestyle in Fukuoka, Japan. A year ago in Budapest, Märtens finished second at the World Championships over this distance.
In Japan he was beaten by Australian Samuel Short and Ahmed Hafnaoui from Tunisia in 3:42.20 minutes.
