Swimming EM in Rome: cliff diver Schmidbauer wins gold

The cliff diver Iris Schmidbauer won gold at the premiere of her spectacular sport as part of a swimming championship.

The 27-year-old won in Rome on Friday with 309.30 points ahead of Ukraine’s Antonina Vyshywanowa and Italy’s Elisa Cosetti. The second German starter, Anna Bader, finished fourth with 281.90 points.

In cliff jumping, which the world association officially calls high diving, the athletes in the Italian capital jump from a height of 20 meters into a pool. The men jump from a height of 27 meters. High Diving is integrated into the European Swimming Championships for the first time this year.

Timo Barthel and Jaden Eikermann had previously won the bronze medal in synchronized diving from the tower.

The two German water jumpers were only beaten by the victorious Brits Ben Cutmore and Kyle Kothari as well as Kirill Boliuch and Oleksij Sereda from the Ukraine. For their six jumps from a height of ten meters, 26-year-old Barthel and 17-year-old Eikermann received 369.30 points.

At the World Championships in June in Budapest, the German duo finished fifth as the third best Europeans.

Meanwhile, Germany’s best water jumper, Tina Punzel, missed her hoped-for third medal. The 27-year-old finished fourth in the three-meter board competition on Friday. Punzel received 277.65 points for her five jumps. The second German starter Lena Hentschel was twelfth with 233.95 points. The Italian Chiara Pellacani was crowned European Champion. Silver went to Michelle Heimberg from Switzerland, bronze went to Yasmin Harper from the UK.

On Thursday, Punzel and Hentschel won the title in synchronized jumping from the three-meter board. She also won gold in mixed synchronized jumping with Lou Massenberg in the Italian capital.
