Swedish head of government: Löfven surprisingly announces resignation

The Swedish head of government Stefan Löfven has announced that he will resign from his position as party leader of the Social Democrats at the party congress in November and that he will also resign as prime minister afterwards. The decision had matured in him for a while, said the 64-year-old in a speech in Akersberga near Stockholm.

As a reason, Löfven said that he had been party chairman for ten years and wanted to offer his successor the best possible conditions for next year’s elections. Löfven had only been re-elected head of government a month and a half ago.

Not the first resignation – but the last

At the end of June, Löfven had already resigned as Prime Minister after a vote of no confidence. After a few days, however, he received the necessary support in the Swedish parliament. The trigger for the government crisis was a dispute over rental prices for new buildings. Löfven is currently leading a red-green minority government. It is the third government he heads. The next parliamentary election is planned for September 2022.
