Sustainability: You should ignore these products when you next go shopping

Germans consume around 60 kilograms of meat per capita per year, half of which is pork. For this, around 60 million pigs are slaughtered every year and almost six million tons of pork are produced. These are huge numbers. Numbers that can also lead to problems. Meat consumption is a question of conscience in itself that consumers are asking themselves more and more often.

Of course, it is therefore the most obvious thing to do without animal products such as meat and sausage. One new study around the Chinese scientist Gang Liu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences looked at the meat supply all over Germany. Anyone who would significantly reduce their meat consumption in this country could make a large contribution to climate protection. You don’t have to go vegan straight away; effects would already be seen if you eat the whole animal instead of just fine parts such as fillets. Read more about this here.

Make a contribution to the environment

There are other ways in which you can do something for the environment when shopping in the supermarket – without having to restrict yourself too much. For example, one could start with avoiding food wrapped in plastic and better buying loose food. This is now possible in most supermarkets. So-called “unpackaged” stores are also opening in more and more cities. There you go shopping – like our grandmothers in their day – with lockable glass containers and simply fill up the groceries. That saves a lot of packaging waste. Read more about the “Unpackaged” stores here.
