Sustainability – war drives energy transition – economy

According to a study, the consequences of the war in Ukraine could accelerate the energy transition in Germany. According to an analysis by the credit insurer Allianz Trade, the green transition could sometimes be more successful than previously expected, although the federal government must initially rely more on coal in its quest for greater energy independence. More coal-fired power generation will not increase CO₂ emissions in the EU because they are limited by the EU emissions trading system. Because of the high emissions trading prices, it is very unlikely that coal will replace Russian gas in the long term, said study author Markus Zimmer. In the medium term, Germany’s ambitions are aimed at a more than fourfold increase in renewable energy capacity. According to the study, this also boosts growth and employment. The expansion of electricity generation capacity alone will lead directly and indirectly to additional value creation of 40 billion euros per year and will employ an average of 440,000 workers from 2022 to 2035.
