Family Minister Lisa Paus advocates paid time off for partners after the birth of a child. So far, this special leave has only rarely been possible.

According to a survey, in many companies in Germany there is no special leave for fathers after the birth of a child. This is the case in 44 percent of the companies surveyed, according to one Survey by the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy on behalf of the Ministry of Family Affairs, which was available to the German Press Agency.

According to this, 26 percent of the companies surveyed grant one day, and a further 26 percent grant two days. For only four percent it is more than two days.

Family Minister Lisa Paus wants to present the results of the survey at a conference in Berlin. The Green politician is campaigning for a so-called family start time – i.e. a two-week paid break for partners after the birth of a child.

“We want to give the partner time to look after the young mother and support her in her regeneration. This gives the family start time an impetus for the partnership-based division of tasks right from the start,” Paus told the dpa. The draft law is currently being discussed within the federal government.
