Two-thirds see a threat to democracy in the AfD

The AfD reaches record highs in polls, but many Germans see it as a threat to democracy. A majority rejects working with Weidel, Chrupalla & Co.

Despite the high of According to a survey, around a third of Germans see no threat to democracy. This emerges from the published ZDF “political barometer”.

According to this, around two-thirds of those surveyed believe that the AfD is dangerous for democracy – including 68 percent in the west and 53 percent in the east. A total of 32 percent see no threat to democracy from the AfD. The rest of the respondents responded with “don’t know”.

In addition, 78 percent assume that right-wing extremist views are widespread in the AfD. 19 percent say no.

A majority of 55 percent does not want any political cooperation between the Union, SPD, Greens, FDP and Left with the AfD, according to a representative survey for “Focus”. On the other hand, 36 percent are against categorically ruling out referendums and coalitions with the AfD. The rejection of such a “fire wall” is particularly strong among the supporters of the CDU and CSU with 31 percent, highest with 90 percent among AfD supporters. The CDU has ruled out any coalition or similar forms of cooperation with the AfD by party convention resolution.

In the “Politbarometer” the AfD increased in the Sunday question for the third time in a row and reached a high of 19 percent (plus 1) in this survey. If there were a federal election on Sunday, the SPD would only get 18 percent (minus 1), the CDU/CSU would remain at 28 percent. The Greens (16 percent), FDP (6) and Left (5) would also remain unchanged. With such a result, neither the ruling traffic light coalition would have a parliamentary majority nor a coalition of Union and SPD. It would be enough for an alliance of CDU/CSU, Greens and FDP.
