Surprise in the DFB Cup: Frankfurt stumbles in Mannheim

Third division team Waldhof Mannheim caused a big surprise in the first round of the DFB Cup and spoiled Oliver Glasner’s coaching debut at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Mannheimers won on Sunday (08.08.2021) 2-0 (0-0) and made Glasner look confused on the sidelines. Marcel Seegert (48th minute) managed the celebrated opening goal, Joseph Boyamba (50th) screwed the noise level up again with the 2-0. The Frankfurt team also had to play outnumbered for the last half hour because Martin Hinteregger saw the yellow-red card (62nd).

Mannheim defends cleverly and then strikes twice

In a rather uneventful first half, the really good chances were actually only in the phase just before half-time whistle. First, Daichi Kamada should have headed the Eintracht lead from close range in the 43rd minute, but missed the Mannheim case. In return, Waldhof had the double chance to put the Bundesliga side under real pressure. Kevin Trapp held against Dominik Martinovic and immediately afterwards against Marcel Costly, who finished too centrally (44th).

Seegert then did better shortly after the restart: Marc Schnatterer brought a corner kick from the left into the penalty area, where Seegert had to bend quite a bit to head the ball into the far corner. But he managed to do that (48th). And it got even worse for Eintracht: The team of coach Glasner had barely shaken when they had to bring the ball back to the center circle – Boyamba was sent by Martinovic in the direction of Trapp and stayed ice cold. The 2-0 after 50 minutes was not undeserved.

After Hinteregger was sent off, nothing worked

A visibly frustrated Glasner then switched offensively and brought in Amin Younes for defender Tuta. But shortly after the best Frankfurt Trapp had even prevented the third goal, there was the next blow in the neck: Costly sprinted over Hinteregger, the Austrian touched his opponent and saw the second yellow card of the day: expulsion. The Mannheim victory was then no longer in danger. In fact, it was even Trapp again who had to save against Martinovic with an excellent foot defense (72nd). In the end there was a deserved success of seventeenth in the table in the 3rd division on the scoreboard of the Carl Benz Stadium.
