Taylor Swift may have had the better evening. The singer celebrated with her friends in her box, alcohol was also involved, while her boyfriend Travis Kelce was building up more and more frustration on the sidelines and, out of sheer anger, rudely bumped into his coach Andy Reid.
But in the end that was forgotten. With a touchdown in overtime, the Chiefs defeated their opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, 25 to 22. And that should be the start of a dynasty, promised quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “We’re not done yet and we’re going to celebrate,” said the 28-year-old, who appeared angry and unnerved at times.
Decision after extension
It wasn’t the expected fireworks display of brilliant moves that both teams are known for. Instead, the game dragged on painfully at times. With a few exceptions. The 49ers, the team around the young and very cool quarterback Brock Purdy, had better control of the ball and simply gained more yards on the field. And they didn’t let the Chiefs get into the game at all.
But the 49ers also couldn’t pull away despite two touchdowns. The Chiefs managed to come back from a ten-point deficit again, went into overtime and won. And Travis Kelce used the rest of his voice to encourage celebration.
Usher turns stadium into his stage
No team would have had the necessary calm for their performance: Usher, one of the most successful singers of all time, didn’t need long to transform the stadium into his stage. A platform for the expected roller skating numbers – and a playing field full of people: stilt walkers, acrobats and many, many fans. “People like us,” as Usher called them, people of all ages who celebrated the 20th anniversary of his most successful album “Confessions” with him.
That was the focus of the performance, which, as usual, lasted less than a quarter of an hour. Usher had a large marching band play “Love in this Club,” but the red piano was for Alica Keyes. Other guests included Lil Jon and HER.
The performance was made for the audience on the screens. Almost nothing could be understood in the stadium and hardly anything could be seen apart from the light reflections: the audience and actors were equipped with light bracelets that flashed synchronously in changing colors. And then the show was over again.
