The German handball players missed direct Olympic qualification, but still have a chance. An overview of which German teams have been in Paris so far – and which ones have not.
The German basketball players are automatically included as world champions The Olympics are there, the volleyball players and both hockey teams have also already qualified. Other German selections can still make it to Paris.
This is the status of qualification in team sports:
football
The men failed to qualify for the first time since London 2012. The women will book their ticket with a win on February 23rd in the Nations League semi-final against France. If they lose, the team would have to win against the loser of the Spain-Netherlands semi-final five days later, as the French are automatically there as hosts. The German women were missing in Tokyo, but they won gold in Rio in 2016.
Handball
As fourth in the European Championship, the German men narrowly missed out on the direct ticket. They still have a chance in a qualifying tournament in March. Then Germany meets Croatia, Algeria and Austria in a group of four and has to finish at least second. The women also have to finish at least second in a group with Montenegro, Slovenia and Paraguay in April. The last time the handball players qualified for the Olympic Games was in Beijing in 2008.
basketball
Dennis Schröder’s team secured participation in the Olympics with the World Cup title. The prospects for the women at the qualifying tournament in February in Brazil are not bad.
Basketball 3×3
The starting places are awarded partly via the ranking list and partly through qualifying tournaments in May. German teams were not represented at the premiere in Tokyo in 2021.
hockey
Both teams secured their Olympic ticket through their victories in the qualifying tournaments in January.
volleyball
The men’s team secured a place at the Olympics for the first time since 2012 at the qualifying tournament in Brazil. The women missed out on the direct ticket and now have to make up places in the world rankings in order to still be there in Paris.
Beach volleyball
The qualification phase runs until June 2024. In Paris there are two starting places per nation for men and two for women. The participation of Nils Ehlers/Clemens Wickler is considered certain. There is no second male duo. Among the women, Svenja Müller/Cinja Tillmann and Laura Ludwig/Louisa Lippmann have the best chances.
Water polo
The Olympics will take place again without the German teams. Both women and men failed early at the European Championships in January and thus missed the chance to make it to Paris through a qualifying tournament.

The Olympics in Paris will take place again without German teams.
