A year before the Summer Games in Paris, the IOC will not issue formal invitations to the National Olympic Committees of Russia and Belarus.

The IOC will be one year ahead of the Summer Games in Paris will not issue any formal invitations to the National Olympic Committees of Russia and Belarus.

The background is the unexplained participation of athletes from both countries because of the war of aggression against Ukraine. As the International Olympic Committee also announced on Thursday, the NOC from Guatemala, which is currently suspended, will not be invited either.

Traditionally, the IOC sends out invitations to the 200 or so National Olympic Committees a year before the next Games. The deadline for the 2024 Paris Games is July 26th. A decision on the status of Russia and Belarus can only be expected after the summer, as German IOC President Thomas Bach recently hinted. After the recent deliberations of the Executive Committee, it was said that the decision would be made when the time was right.

The IOC has recommended to its member federations the re-admission of individual starters from Russia and Belarus under certain conditions. However, the attitude to this is different. Several world federations, including athletics, continue to exclude Russians and Belarusians. Others have approved the return of athletes from those countries.
