Subway: The expansion to Martinsried begins – district of Munich

It’s starting: With “almost 20 years of delay” – according to Planegg’s mayor Hermann Nafziger (CSU) – in the next few days construction machines will be used on the future subway line between Lena-Christ-Straße and Am Klopferspitz street in Martinsried Pop up. They will start with excavation work for the 990-meter-long section of the U 6 between the Großhadern Clinic and the campus in Martinsried and initially create interim storage for gravel and rubble on an area of around 40,000 square meters. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony with Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) is to be made up for on February 6th.

During an on-site visit on the large meadow between the campus and Lena-Christ-Strasse, Jörg Wüst, project manager at the central Swabian construction company Leonard Weiß, explained the next steps on Wednesday: The first heavy construction equipment will roll out in the coming days. They will start excavation work. It is planned to separate the rubble into “contaminated” and “uncontaminated” on the spot. Among other things, it could be polluted with building materials from the 1960s, because there was once a gravel pit here that was later filled with a wide variety of materials.

One kilometer long, 25 meters wide and ten meters deep – this is how the open pit for the construction will be

The footpath and cycle path between the clinic and Martinsried will remain open during the work, but will be relocated several times. The approximately 25-meter-wide site ford is protected by a massive site fence, resulting in a pit that is almost one kilometer long and around ten meters deep. The entire construction work is carried out in an open construction method – this also saves costs. Wüst explained that one would constantly coordinate with the scientific institutes and the university in order to generate as few vibrations as possible that could disrupt the scientific experiments. The first excavation work should be completed by Christmas.

“The big steps will then begin in 2023,” said Wüst. Around 120 workers will then use “very large equipment”. The central construction company wants to create its own accommodation for the workers. Klopferspitz and Lena-Christ-Strasse should not be directly affected by the work for the time being.

City Hall Managing Director Stefan Schaudig promises residents “that there will be no approach from Lena-Christ-Strasse. There will be no additional traffic.” However, this only affects the actual subway construction and not the subsequent construction of the station and the bus area. Since the station is also to be approached from Lena-Christ-Strasse, it is probably essential that construction traffic is to be expected there.

Will there be further delays? Site manager Wüst kept a low profile. He also cannot yet say whether the general shortage of building materials will play a role in some areas, he emphasized. “At the moment we don’t have any material shortages.” The actual construction work in depth – i.e. the shell construction – should be completed by the end of 2025. Then the pit is filled in. However, the construction site will then continue to exist for around two years. Project manager Wüst does not expect the U 6 to go into operation between the campus in Martinsried and the previous terminus at the Großhadern Clinic before 2027. The “brain train” between Martinsried and Garching, which is already popularly known, will initially run for a few months in trial operation.

The municipality of Planegg and the project management company for the section of the U 6, which is currently estimated at around 170 million euros, want to inform the population about every major construction project over the next few years. The Planegger artist Mike Maurus will create explanatory comics, which can be read on the municipality’s website, among other places.
