Subway in Munich: U6 will be interrupted in the north of Munich for almost eight weeks – Munich

Subway passengers will have to prepare for significant restrictions in the north of the city this year. As in previous years, the Munich municipal utilities (SWM) and the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) are continuing to work on the complete renovation of the subway.

Therefore, the U6 line must be interrupted at the Kieferngarten subway station from Monday, April 22nd to Thursday, June 13th. At the start of the European Football Championship there should be no more restrictions, assures the MVG.

During the construction period, the trains will run as follows: Between the Großhadern Clinic and Kieferngarten, the U6 will run as usual every five to ten minutes; in the section from Kieferngarten to the Garching Research Center, a shuttle train will run every 15 minutes. Passengers have to change at the Kieferngarten subway station to continue their journey. In some cases it is necessary to transfer via the mezzanine because, according to MVG, trains cannot always leave the usual tracks at Kieferngarten or in Fröttmaning.

There will be capacity bottlenecks on the U6 between Kieferngarten and Garching-Hochbrück throughout the construction project. Trains can only run there every 15 minutes because there is only one track available in the construction site area. The MVG recommends passengers to check early on alternative routes with regional buses, which usually run between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The reason for the renewed construction work: The tracks north of the Fröttmaning subway station have also reached the end of their service life. That’s why eight switches including ballast, sleepers and 1,000 meters of running rail as well as 1,300 meters of conductor rail have to be replaced. In a second phase, probably in 2025, a further seven switches, 700 meters of track and 1,200 meters of conductor rail will be replaced.

At the start of the measure, passengers can find out more at an information stand on Monday and Tuesday, April 22nd and 23rd, at the Garching Research Center subway station and on April 23rd and 24th at Maibaumplatz in Garching. The exact opening times of the information stands and further information can be found on the special page mvg.de/weich. There are also tips for alternative travel options to and from Garching.
