Subterranea: Insights into the mysterious world under the earth

A book with depth, in the truest sense of the word: the new release “Subterranea – The mysterious world under the earth” is devoted to a topic that lies in the dark. Geographer and author Chris Fitch, who is editor of the Royal Geographical Society’s journal, sheds light on a fascinating chapter we rarely study: that of what lies unseen below.

The underworld has always captured the imagination and inspired writers such as Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. Fitch, on the other hand, has authored an unusual guide to vertical discovery that leads not up, but down.

In the kingdom of stalactites and stalagmites

With his expertise, he brings us closer to ten caves in four sections: “Creation”, “Early History”, “Modern Times” and “Present” are the chapters. We embark on a reading adventure into realms that have so far remained hidden from us and learn a great deal about geology, cultural history and the history of technology.

In addition to the spectacular photographs, there are filigree maps and graphics for each underground station, which the designer Matthew Young created especially for this illustrated book. This combination of text and image allows us to dive into another world – to cave drawings, smugglers’ tunnels and atomic bomb-proof bunkers.
