Stuttgart’s new district “Rosenstein”: What actually happened to Stuttgart 21? – Culture

It is one of the largest shopping centers in Germany and is called “Milaneo”. Titanically designed, 43,000 square meters in size. As architecture and urban planning: a complete disaster. It was opened ten years ago, as a vanguard for the controversial Stuttgart 21 railway project. Because S21 should be done by lowering the station and tracks under the earth about it clearing the space for a great new city. The Milaneo shopping center and a few huge office buildings, which are already half empty, were among the first beneficiaries of this plan. When you visit “Milaneo”, you immediately think: Please just don’t build anything. Or create a lawn. Roughly the size of 120 football fields. That’s about 85 hectares. This is the land that is vacant in the middle of Stuttgart and has apparently already been sold off to some extent. The question is: what comes next?
