Students forced to vacate their Crous accommodation during the Olympic Games

Everyone must participate in the effort. Just over a year from the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the capital and its entire region are mobilized. This Thursday, it was the students who learned that they were also going to have to contribute in their own way to the big party.

On its Twitter account, the Regional Center for University and School Works (Crous) justified making some of its accommodation available to organizers for the months of July and August 2024, i.e. the periods of the Olympic Games (from July 26 to August 11) and Paralympics (August 28 to September 8). “The #JO2024 is an exceptional event for our country. The Crous, like all public actors, will be there to ensure their success. »

Requested by the State

An initiative which is not due to the structure since it has, according to its communication, been “requested by the State to mobilize a limited part of its housing”. Faced with the difficulty of accommodating all the delegations, organizers, partners, etc. The State seems to have found a new emergency solution.

But the announcement did not go unnoticed, because these accommodations are normally occupied by students, and the reactions on social networks were quick to fall. “But suddenly, what are the others doing who can’t go home during this period?? “, “the shame of asking people to leave their homes…”

Students relocated

Faced with the outcry caused by this announcement and the publication by several accounts of the email informing the students concerned, the Crous explained itself by recalling that “less than 7% of accommodation is concerned”: “As an indication, nearly 30% of dwellings are unoccupied at this time. »

The Crous reassures the displaced students by assuring that “students wishing to stay in Ile-de-France during the period can be relocated”, and that those who leave their accommodation to some Olympic athlete can find it at the start of the school year and will obviously be exempt from rent during the summer period.
