Universities are increasingly becoming “places of anti-Western radicalization,” criticize the student associations JSUD and RCDS. Physical attacks on Jewish students and anti-Israel protests characterized everyday life at universities.
The Jewish Student Union of Germany (JSUD) and the Ring of Christian Democratic Students (RCDS) have expressed extreme concern about the culture of debate at German universities.
The editorial network Germany reports on a joint communication from the associations. It says: “Exclusions of democratic colleagues from events, counter-demonstrations that question Israel’s right to exist, and physical attacks on Jewish students characterize everyday discourse at universities.”
The associations see a growing influence of extremist students. “Our universities must be a place of free exchange and debate. Unfortunately, they are increasingly becoming a place of anti-Western radicalization,” it said.
Banned from the house after suspected more anti-Semitic attack
In Berlin, the Jewish FU student Lahav Shapira was hospitalized last weekend with broken bones in his face. A 23-year-old pro-Palestinian fellow student is said to have hit and kicked him on a street in Berlin-Mitte. The public prosecutor’s office assumes a targeted attack and an anti-Semitic background.
The university issued a ban on the alleged perpetrator on Friday. The university announced that this applies to the entire campus for three months and can be extended. Online teaching formats are not affected by the decision.
