Weak economy, high energy prices – the German chemical industry is in crisis. Companies are cutting back on systems that use a lot of electricity or gas and are choosing to invest abroad instead of at home. The Association of the Chemical Industry (VCI) expects thisthat production will fall by a tenth this year. Overall, the factories are only three-quarters full. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is now making the future of the important industry a top priority and is inviting people to the chemistry summit in the Chancellery in two weeks. However, there are serious problems with the preparations, as an internal document shows.
