Desperate people gamble for their lives: The South Korean series was a huge hit for Netflix. Now “Squid Game” goes into the second round.

The shooting of the second season of the Korean Netflix world hit “Squid Game” have started. “The shooting is on, we’re producing now,” said Netflix manager Don Kang, who works in South Korea as Vice President of Content, the German Press Agency.

“We’re on our way and everyone is super excited to see it all come to life on screen now.” A “very exciting cast” was won for the project. New faces include Park Gyu-young, best known for her role in the Netflix series Sweet Home, and singer-actress Jo Yu-ri, a former member of girl group Iz*One.

Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk, who won an Emmy for the first “Squid Game” season, will also direct and produce the second season, according to Netflix information from the end of June. Netflix has not yet given a start date for the second season. In reports, however, 2024 is traded.

Worldwide Netflix hit

“Squid Game” is one of Netflix’s biggest hits to date. In the first three months from mid-September 2021, the drama series was viewed more than 265 million times and watched over 2.2 billion hours. More than half of all Netflix subscribers watched the eight-hour survival drama.

Season one was a mixture of thriller and social criticism: In a game show, hundreds of highly indebted people from completely different social backgrounds compete against each other in children’s games to win millions in prize money. Losers are killed instantly in the macabre competition.

Actor Oh Young-soo won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the number one contestant, and the South Korean series was also nominated for Best Drama Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series.

“Squid Game” also led to criticism in this country – for example, daycare children played the series. After that, the appeal came up that children should not watch the episodes.
