Streaming or via satellite: How much electricity does it really use?

Does streaming use more power than the satellite dish? An important question, especially now in the energy crisis, when every kilowatt hour counts. An English researcher did the math – and found out that it ultimately depends on something completely different than the type of transmission.

I grew up in a small village in Hesse. There was no cable connection there until a few years ago. As in many sparsely populated regions, it was too expensive for the providers to lay a cable network, and the profit would have been far too low for them.

My parents, like many in the area, had a satellite dish installed at some point and watched TV from then on. Digitization is a snail in Germany, but now it’s arriving in the village. Recently the offer “Fibre-optic connection for you too!” in her mailbox.
