Millie Bobby Brown was 12 when she became world famous with the mystery series “Stranger Things”. Today she is 18, confident and influential. But her path was also a struggle, she says.
She is only 18 and has been an integral part of the Netflix family for years: Millie Bobby Brown is the face of the streaming hit “Stranger Things”, now writing screenplays and producing. From Friday (November 4th) the Briton will again play “Enola Holmes”, the little sister of master detective Sherlock.
“I’m lucky to be supported in this business by a company that has given me so many opportunities and so much love throughout my career,” Brown said in an interview with the German Press Agency about her steep rise in the US streaming service . “It’s a group of people who genuinely care about me and have known me since I was ten.”
Breakthrough as mysterious Eleven in “Stranger Things”
Born in Marbella, Spain, Brown was in front of the camera from an early age. She first moves back to Great Britain with her parents and siblings, then to the USA, where Brown’s father works as a real estate agent. At the age of seven, she was discovered at an acting workshop for children and got her first, smaller roles – including in series like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Modern Family”.
But the family is moving back home. While there, Brown is auditioning for the role of the mysterious Eleven in the fantasy series Stranger Things, which premiered in 2016 and has remained one of Netflix’s biggest hits to date.
Even young women can achieve goals in showbiz
The twelve-year-old British woman with her hair cropped short for the shoot has been the secret star of the series from the start, makes her feature film debut in “Godzilla II” in 2019, models and acts as a producer in “Enola Holmes”. The screenplay for an upcoming Netflix film is also in her hands.
“My age definitely had a big impact on my career. Young women sometimes don’t get as many opportunities as boys and young men, so it was always a bit of a bigger struggle,” Brown admits.
Her character Enola Holmes is underestimated in the second part because of her age. A condition that you know yourself. “But I have set myself the goal of proving people and society that they are wrong and that young women in particular can achieve their goals and dreams in our business,” explains Brown confidently.
“She has a very sharp mind, is a very good storyteller and has a wonderful energy that she brings to her acting,” says her co-star Henry Cavill (39). The Brit, who is used to playing the leading role in productions such as “Superman” or “The Witcher”, is overshadowed by his younger sister as Sherlock Holmes.
Further film projects planned
In the new case, she has to solve the disappearance of a factory worker and comes across the machinations of big industrialists. Based on the Nancy Springer book series and inspired by real-life events, the crime comedy features sharp humor, a brilliant acting Brown and a very topical issue: women’s fight for their rights.
And what’s next for Brown after the end of “Stranger Things” after the next season? She is currently shooting “The Electric State”, a science fiction film by the Russo brothers (“Avengers”), and other projects have already been announced. And a return as an astute detective is also very likely. “I would always love to play Enola. Of course, if the opportunity presented itself, I would take it.”
