The duo behind Netflix hit Dark presented a new series at TIFF in Canada. This time, “1899” is about mysterious events on the high seas.

The German mystery series “1899” celebrated its world premiere on Tuesday evening (local time) with much applause at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The first two episodes of the new project by “Dark” creators Jantje Friese (screenplay) and Baran bo Odar (director) were shown. “To be honest, we’re pretty nervous even after three seasons of Dark. This feels very fresh to us. It’s our baby,” Odar said in Toronto.

In eight episodes, “1899” tells of the mysterious events that took place during an emigrant ship’s voyage from Europe to New York at the end of the 19th century. When the crew discovers a second ship on the high seas that has been missing for months, the voyage takes an unexpected, grim turn.

The international cast includes Andreas Pietschmann as the nightmare-haunted captain and Emily Beecham as the mysterious passenger Maura Franklin. “I was dancing inside when the call came that we were working together again,” said Pietschmann, who has already played a leading role in “Dark”, at the film festival.

The mystery thriller series “1899” is scheduled to be available on Netflix by the end of the year.
