The emergency services are also in constant use in Germany’s eastern neighboring countries: In Poland, people are killed by falling trees. There are power and train failures in the Czech Republic.

The storm “Zeynep” hit Poland with great force and claimed at least three lives. In the Greater Poland and Lublin Voivodeships, a tree fell on a moving car on Saturday and killed the driver, the Interior Ministry announced.

According to information from the broadcaster TVN24, a fatal accident also occurred in a forest area near Warsaw. At least six people across the country were injured.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called on citizens to stay at home. Numerous trees blocked roads and roofs were torn off. The fire brigades have been called to more than 13,000 operations since Saturday night. More than 1.1 million households were temporarily without power due to damaged lines.

A large sheet metal roof was torn from the National Museum in Szczecin. The Polish railway company PKP recommended postponing trips. Wind gusts of up to 119 kilometers per hour were measured both on the Baltic Sea coast and in the Tatra Mountains on the border with Slovakia.

Power outages in the Czech Republic

In the neighboring Czech Republic, around 26,000 households were affected by power outages. The western administrative regions around Pilsen (Plzen) and Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) were hardest hit. Shortly after the previous storm “Ylenia”, the fire brigades were again in continuous operation.

In Cercany near Prague, a regional train hit a tree. Nobody was injured in the accident. Several railway lines had to be closed. The cable car to Sněžka in the Giant Mountains temporarily stopped operating. In Prague, the city administration called on people not to walk in parks and forests.
