Stormy winds from the northwest push the water of the North Sea into the mouth of the Elbe. Hamburg gets the first storm surge of the season.

The first The seasonal storm surge flooded the Hamburg fish market on Saturday afternoon. According to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the water in the Elbe rose to 1.82 meters above mean high water at around 5:30 p.m. The German Weather Service reported that a strong to stormy northwesterly current was bringing cool and moist sea air to Hamburg.

The last time a storm surge occurred in Hamburg was on August 7th. The cause of the unusual summer event was the storm “Zacharias”. Storm surge season runs from September 15th to March 31st.

This year’s dike defense exercise only took place in Hamburg on Friday. According to the Senate, the dikes, flood protection walls, flood protection gates, barriers, locks and pumping stations are in a safe condition.
