Heavy rains have caused a landslide in southeast Alaska. Three people were killed – three more are still missing.

A landslide has killed at least three people in a remote area in the US state of Alaska. Three others, including two minors, were still missing, US broadcaster NBC reported, citing authorities. The landslide occurred on Monday evening after heavy rain near the town of Wrangell on the island of the same name in the southeast Alaska happened.

A girl was found dead on Monday during an initial search after the accident, the broadcaster quoted Austin McDaniel, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Safety. According to him, three houses were hit by the landslide.

On Tuesday, a drone spotted the bodies of two adults, which had been recovered, the ministry said, according to the broadcaster. In addition, a woman was also saved alive on Tuesday and her condition is good. Two young people were among the three missing people.

Such landslides are a risk in southeast Alaska because the slopes there are very steep, NBC quoted geologist Barrett Salisbury from the Ministry of the Environment there. Heavy rain and melting snow therefore increase the risk.
