The arrival of Typhoon Khanun in South Korea has caused flooding, landslides and damage to buildings. At least one person died in the southeastern city of Daegu, the national news agency Yonhap reported. The 67-year-old man was found unconscious in a flooded river and later pronounced dead. One person is also missing in Daegu. She was in a wheelchair when she fell into an overflowing river.

The tropical storm hit the southeast on Thursday morning with heavy rain and strong gusts of wind. According to the weather office, he slowly moved further north across the country before he is expected to cross the border to North Korea on Friday night.

Thousands of people were asked to vacate their homes because of the risk of flooding. South Korean broadcasters reported, among other things, about flooded coastal roads and fallen trees in the southeastern port city of Busan. Many roads were also closed in other areas due to flooding and landslides. Hundreds of flights and trains have been canceled.

As recently as July, more than 40 people died in the south of the Korean peninsula as a result of heavy rainfall and flooding. The Korean Peninsula is hit by hurricanes every summer and early autumn.
