More than a decade ago, when the question was whether climate change could be stopped by dumping CO₂ industrial emissions into the earth and seabed, the environmental associations had all the good arguments on their side for their clear rejection of this idea . The so-called CCS technology (carbon capture and storage), in which carbon dioxide is chemically dissolved from emissions and pressed into the ground, is a massive intervention in nature and is very susceptible to disruption. Groundwater on land can become salinized, maritime repositories can hardly be monitored over centuries, and CO₂ can escape through cracks in the rock at any time.
