An incredible construction:
She looks like an ordinary person, but this character’s face belongs to a woman who lived 4,000 years ago.
She died in Lagmansören, Sweden – and has now been faithfully recreated.
The woman’s unique skull was found in a grave during road works in 1920.
There were two people in the stone coffin: in addition to the approximately 20-year-old woman, there was also a seven-year-old boy.
The boy’s bones could not be reconstructed because their condition was too bad.
But using a 3G model of the woman’s skull, it was possible to find out what she looked like 4,000 years ago in the Stone Age.
In 2020, work began on replicating the Stone Age woman.
And this is the result.
Model builder and archaeologist Oscar Nilsson planned and built the sculpture.
The face was reconstructed muscle by muscle.
In order to simulate the mouth, the structure of the teeth was examined.
The researcher had no information about the hair, skin and eye color because the DNA samples were too bad.
He chose them based on the information available about the population 4,000 years ago.
Back then, people made their living from hunting, fishing, and gathering plants and berries—activities that are hard to imagine today.
The researchers do not know the relationship between the woman and the boy.
But one thing is clear: the reconstruction of the Stone Age woman allows us to get very close to our ancestors.
The sculpture has been on display at Västernorrland Museum since January.
At the end of 2021, the exhibition on antiquity was reopened under the name “Ancient Journey – Nine thousand years of human traces”.
