State to pay $139 million to gymnasts victims of sexual assault by Larry Nassar

A colossal sum commensurate with the scale of the scandal. The American government announced Tuesday that it would pay nearly $139 million to more than a hundred former gymnasts who were victims of sexual assault committed by a former national team doctor, Larry Nassar.

The doctor is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2017 and 2018 for decades of sexual violence. In all, 265 women were recognized as victims of sexual assault.

The compensation granted by the government is a response to complaints filed by numerous victims who accused the FBI of not having conducted an “adequate investigation,” explained the Department of Justice in a press release.
