In the second attempt it worked: Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Haseloff was confirmed in office by the state parliament with 53 votes. He had previously missed the required absolute majority in a first vote.
In the second ballot, the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt re-elected CDU politician Reiner Haseloff as Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt. 53 MPs voted for Haseloff, 43 against him with one abstention.
In the first ballot he only got 48 votes and thus narrowly missed the necessary majority of 49 votes. The new black-red-yellow coalition in Saxony-Anhalt has 56 seats in the state parliament. Haseloff accepted the election and was subsequently sworn in.
Seven ministerial posts for the CDU
The CDU had unexpectedly clearly won the state election on June 6 with 37.1 percent and has 40 MPs. Haseloff’s CDU forms a coalition with the SPD and FDP, the first of its kind in reunified Germany. It comes in the Magdeburg state parliament with a clear majority with 56 of the 97 seats.
The four ministers and five women ministers should also be appointed and sworn in by the afternoon. In addition to the head of government, the CDU has seven ministers. The SPD has two ministerial posts, the FDP one.
Thanks to the gains, the CDU has a majority of one vote in the new state parliament alone, with the SPD alone. That was Haseloff, who in the past two years could not always rely on the entire CDU parliamentary group, but too tightly. The FDP, which had managed to return to the state parliament after ten years with 6.4 percent, was regarded by the conservatives as a natural coalition partner.
No fourth term
A continuation of the black-red-green state government had ruled out the CDU’s already unpopular Greens because of the black-red majority. In the election, the SPD had slipped to a historic low of 8.4 percent. After days of explorations, a party congress, coalition negotiations and a member survey, the Social Democrats had also agreed to join the new coalition.
Haseloff was elected for the first time in 2011. In the election by the CDU / SPD coalition, he had to accept a number of votes against, including from the government camp. The 67-year-old does not want to run for a fourth term and wants to build CDU boss Sven Schulze (42) as his successor in the coming years. Schulze becomes Minister of Economics and Agriculture in the Haseloff cabinet.
