It is probably the first dismissal of a committee chairman in the history of the Bavarian state parliament: the AfD education politician Markus Bayerbach is no longer chairman of the education committee. The committee voted 9:2 on Thursday morning to dismiss the only AfD committee chairman in the Bavarian state parliament. Shortly before that, he confirmed that he wanted to remain a member of the committee. “Education is my core competency,” said the long-standing support teacher.

After the publication of controversial AfD chats in December, he got caught up in contradictions as to whether he himself had been part of these chats. When it came out that he was taking part in the chat, at least temporarily, the committee felt “deceived and lied to” and decided to vote out Bayerbach.

According to BR research, Bayerbach posted more than 450 times in the chat. In a discussion about the disadvantages faced by students with a migration background, he wrote: “Actually, every Muslim student must be considered Christianophobic. But that doesn’t interest anyone… or Germanophobe.” Bayerbach replied that the statements were “maliciously interpreted.”

Vice-Chairman Tobias Gotthardt (free voters) initially chaired the meeting. The AfD can now nominate a new candidate, the election could be next week.
