According to state media, the most important ship in the Russian Black Sea fleet was “severely damaged” in a munitions explosion. A fire should be the reason. Ukraine claims to have shelled the ship.

According to Russian state media reports, the Russian warship “Moskva” was “seriously damaged” by an explosion of ammunition stored on board. “As a result of a fire, ammunition detonated on the missile cruiser ‘Moskva’. The ship was badly damaged,” said the news agencies TASS and Ria Novosti in a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry.

An investigation into the cause of the fire had been launched, the statement said. The crew of the ship had been brought to safety.

Ukraine reports shelling of “Moskva”

The governor of the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa, Maxym Marchenko, had previously stated that Ukrainian soldiers had attacked the “Moskva” with “Neptune”-type missiles and severely damaged it. Ukrainian Presidential Advisor Oleksiy Arestovych said the “flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet” was on fire. According to him, the “Moskva” had a crew of 510.

The “Moskva” is said to have been involved, among other things, in the conquest of the Ukrainian island of snakes at the beginning of the war almost seven weeks ago. Advisor to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Anton Herashchenko, in a social media post, suggested that the warship was hit by a Neptun missile. The Ukrainian in-house development has a range of 280 kilometers.
