State garden show opened in Lower Bavaria – Bavaria

For 132 days it should bloom, sprout and smell in Freyung: The State Garden Show wants to make nature tangible for its visitors under the motto “Forest.Wide.Wonderful”. In sunny and warm spring weather, the show was opened on Thursday by Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU). With its location at an altitude of 800 meters on the Geyersberg in the 7,000-inhabitant town of Freyung, the state garden show is said to be the highest so far. It’s supposed to end on October 3rd.

Key themes are climate change, biodiversity and bodies of water. For example, ideas are to be presented as to how gardens can better cope with the consequences of climate change such as heat and drought in the future.

A total of around 240 shrubs and rose plants, 180 trees, 75,000 bulbs and 24,000 perennials have been planted on the site. There is also a climbing park, a playground, restaurants and a new underground car park.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the Free State has invested around 75 million euros in subsidies in state garden shows over the past 40 years. A total of almost 530 hectares have been greened and upgraded in Bavaria. The first state horticultural show took place in Neu-Ulm in 1980. The anniversary edition 2030 is planned in Nuremberg.
