The first politician to fall for the ominous Twitter account was Mike Mohring. In 2014, the then CDU leader in Thuringia quoted a survey in his party conference speech according to which the SPD had lost favor with voters from 12.4 to eight percent. After the state elections, the Social Democrats had formed an alliance with the Left and the Greens – a big mistake for Mohring, which the SPD now had to atone for with apparently miserable poll numbers. The problem: the figures quoted by the CDU man lacked any basis. In all serious polls after the election, the SPD ended up with values between eleven and 14 percent. “CDU politicians fell for wrong numbers,” reported Mirror online at that time.
